The Missouri Compromise allowed Missouri to be a slave state and Maine to be a free state. This balanced the power of the Northern states vs. the Southern states reguarding to slavery. This compromise was favored by both the North and the South. This compromise was later repealed and replaced by the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
