The romantiv age was a contrast and a reaction to the aerlier epoch of reason. It began with the french revolution (1989) and its ideas of social justice, equality and liberty. Now writers turned to nature instead of sience, as a source of knowledge. There were a shift to emotional and the individual. Many writers wrote in the style of escapism. This meant that they looked inside themselves or into the past in order to escape the annoying real world for it was overwhelmning. Popular genres were Folk-tales

In the US in the beginning of the 1800s a movment towards a seperate independet literature started. Writers wanted ishape a lierature of their own, which resulted in works consisting the natural and individual or the gothic stream and its elements of horror.
