The monarchy in England was weakend and the King Charles I was decapitated in 1648. Two political parties were formed - the Tories and the Whigs and with the Bill of Rights confirmed that the monarchy was subordinate to Parliament. Some writers also fought for liberty ant justice, as there still was a long way until
common people would be able to give voice to the opinions.
Reason and science were starting points for the discussion and exploration of old and new issues. The writers of that age put their faith in reason rather than religion. People were changing their perception of the world and new ideas spread in all areas of society.
Many settlers in the American colonies emigrated to seek religious freedom. As the English faced the great Plague 1655 and the Great Fire in London the following year, there were people who claimed these was Gods punishment for religious questioning and the growing interest in science and politics, so many emirated from Britain to the USA.
