Frederick Vine and Drummond Matthews were both British geologists looked at a massive amount of data and found that the magnetic stripes they found were no mere accident. The rock on the floor contained bits and pieces of iron, and quite a bit. The iron went through a molten state once, but overtime cooled down. As the iron cooled, iron bits lined up in the direction of the Earth's magnetic poles.
