- In late 1792 the National Convention placed the deposed King Louis XVI on trial fro crimes against the French people. Deputies controversially carried out the trial themselves.
- Under the constitution of 1791 Louis was not guilty. His lawyers used this as their main defence.
- Louis' lawyers were skilfull in argument, Louis' testimony was not convincing. The convention voted 693 - 0 for his guilt.
- There was then an argument with the Jacobins wanting Louis' execution and the Girondins wanting 'an appeal to the people'. 387 - 334 for Louis' execution
- Following a meeting with his family Louis was guillotined infront of 100,000 people.
