1 gen 1798 anni - Alien and Sedition Acts

Descrizione:

Four laws passed by the Federalist-dominated 5th United States Congress and signed into law by President John Adams in 1798.

1. The Naturalization Act (1 Stat. 566) ( June 18, 1798)
Increased the period necessary for immigrants to become naturalized citizens in the United States from 5 to 14 years.
Although the law was passed under the guise of protecting national security, most historians conclude it was really intended to decrease the number of citizens, and thus voters, who disagreed with the Federalist Party. At the time, most immigrants supported Thomas Jefferson and the Democratic-Republicans, the political rivals of the Federalists. It had only limited effect, however, as many immigrants rushed to become naturalized before it went into effect, and states could at the time make their own more lenient naturalization laws.
The Act was controversial at the time, even within the Federalist Party, as many Federalists feared it would discourage immigration. It was repealed in 1802 by the Naturalization Law of 1802.

2. Alien Friends Act of 1798 (June 25, 1798)
AKA: An Act Concerning Aliens.
Allowed the president to imprison and deport non-citizens who were deemed dangerous

3. Alien Enemy Act of 1798 ( July 6, 1798)
Allowed the president to imprison and deport non-citizens who were from a hostile nation

4. Sedition Act of 1798 (July 14, 1798)
permitted the deportation, fine, or imprisonment of anyone deemed a threat or publishing “false, scandalous, or malicious writing” against the government of the United States.“Not free: because they will be compelled to make their election between competitors whose pretensions they are not permitted by act equally to examine, to discuss and to ascertain.” The law proved immensely unpopular with the public and the President lost re-election to Thomas Jefferson in 1800. Under the incoming Republican administration, the Sedition Act eventually expired on March 3, 1801
