Camilla Massacre
March in response
to expulsion of
black legislators
from the General
Assembly. Whites
opened fire,
leaving ~a dozen
black protestors
dead and thirty
wounded
Descrizione:
That action, along with General Assembly's expulsion of 27 duly elected black [R] legislators led the U.S. Congress to reimpose military rule to the state and to ban Georgia's newly elected congressmen from taking their seats in the next House of Representatives. This action provided a strong lesson in federal power to other southerners who had hoped to subvert the federal law and constitutional amendments.
