The World Encyclopaedia of Puppetry Arts informs that the two main functions of puppetry is to first ‘tell a story, either in dramatic form or by illustrating a narrative, and the other is to amaze and entertain with special numbers’(World Encyclopaedia of puppetry Arts). The art of Puppetry has existed in Ireland as early as 1744, with Punch featuring in a marionette theatre on Dame Street in Dublin under the direction of Charles Coffee and William Dunkin (World Encyclopaedia of puppetry Arts). Throughout the 19th century puppet shows were preformed around Abbey street Dublin, with records of travelling marionette theatres to Belfast, Cork and Dublin. McCormick’s family The Babes in the Woods, was a string puppet collection shown at the beginning of the 20th century in Ireland.
