The printing press was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in 1440. The purpose of this invention was to create mass copies of the Bible, but become a machine to mass produce literature of all forms. It greatly increased literacy rates in society, as more people were able to obtain literature at a lower price due to its abundance. More information could be shared via books and pamphlets, which lead to rise in the spread of information. This helped create interconnectedness and was one of the first major mechanical machines that started the path for major innovations, including computing innovations.
