17 magg 1954 anni - Brown v. Board of Education

Descrizione:

Brown v. Board of Education is a Supreme Court case that decided whether or not the segregation of public schools violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The case was brought to the Supreme Court by Oliver Brown, a parent of a child who was denied access into a white only school in Topeka, Kansas. The NAACP supported Brown in his argument against the school board with their representative named Thurgood Marshall, who would just so happen to become the first African American Supreme Court justice ever. The fight against school segregation happened in multiple states such as Kansas, North Carolina, Virginia and Delaware, but this one specifically took place in Kansas. A major cause for this event would be the "separate but equal" statement coined from the Plessy v. Ferguson case, where it segregation of schools was ruled constitutional as long as they were equal. It became clear that the education the African American children were receiving as well as the environment in which they received it was not equal to that of a white only school. When the Court ruled unanimously that the segregation of schools violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, it caused a gradual shift in the school system where schools became desegregated.
