Descrizione:

Our Mission @ St. Columba's

To be a Safe Harbor
In the name of Christ
For the love of God
Through the power of the Holy Spirit

St. Columba's Episcopal Church was founded as a mission church in 1979 in Boothbay Harbor. On that first Sunday, a group of faithful people gathered together and worshiped in the living room of a log cabin in the spruce woods. They had a vision and mission to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and for there to be a year-round Episcopal presence of common prayers and weekly worship in the Boothbay Region.

For 35 years, this congregation grew as they moved into various gracious places around town: the United Methodist Church, All Saints by-the-Sea Chapel, The Knights of Pythias Hall, and the Railway Village town hall.

In the early 2000s, the congregation and clergy of St. Columba's raised funds and purchased a spot of land on the Penny Lake Preserve. It is located on a freshwater preserve land trust with hiking trails and has long been considered holy ground by our First Nation neighbors. We care very much about being good stewards of God's Creation.

In 2004-2005, St. Columba's congregation and clergy built and dedicated a new shake-shingle church. It was faithfully designed for the future with clear glass windows, wide-open spaces, handicap accessibility, flexible-use space, moveable chairs, and with sensitivity to the preservation of native landscapes and wildlife. Our one stained glass window above the altar table depicts the Holy Spirit protecting the waters and she steadfastly reminds us to Fear Not.

In October 2012 at the Episcopal Diocese of Maine's 193rd Convention, St. Columba's mission became a fully vested parish church in the diocese, after over 30 years as a mission congregation. This has strengthened our mission in the community and beyond.

We continue to build our shared mission for outreach with All Saints by-the-Sea Summer Chapel on Southport Island. Together with our neighbors in the Boothbay Region, we are strengthened by our common prayers to proclaim God's love for all throughout the year and carry the Light of Christ forward as a beacon of hope.

St. Columba's Church was designed to be open and accessible for all ages to use seven days a week for the glory of God and it is! Each day of the week we have groups that gather for worship services, stretch classes, meditation, Bible study, Garden Club, AA, NAMI, Community Lunches, retreats, musical concerts, and hymn sings. We are a way-station for providing restrooms and drinks of water as folks hike their way around the Penny Lake Land Trust trail. Often people stop by just to quietly sit inside to be nearer to God or meditate in the quiet woods of our Memorial Garden.

All are welcome in this place. We have a never-ending stream of souls who seek to find and share safe harbor throughout all the seasons of life. As our Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry said recently during his visit to Maine, "Love is the lighthouse that can show us the way to safe harbor."
