However, under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I, England defeated the Armada, forcing them to return to Spain and establishing England as a world-class naval power and creator of long-range naval weaponry. By the time the ships returned to Spain, after facing harsh weather conditions and an unexpected loss at sea, nearly 15,000 men had died.
