The Germans realized they needed to make a move before American troops arrived in full. They launched an attack on the British army in the Somme. They took some ground but it was of little strategic value and they used up a lot of their supplies in doing so. As well as almost 700,000 casualties to the British and French combined casualties of almost 800,000
