The Battle of the Somme was a major attack by the Allies along the Somme river. It was a hard fought attack, with 60,000 British casualties on the first day. At the end of the fighting the Allies had gained some territory but had to stop short of their primary goals, being the towns of Péronne and Bapaume. Both sides suffered over 600,000 casualties
