The final battle of the Race to the Sea. This was the largest battle in the Race, and it ended in stalemate all the same. With both sides suffering over 130 thousand casualties. At the conclusion of this battle the German strategy shifted. They decided to make this a war of attrition. In an attempt to make either France or Russia to sue for peace, then consolidate the two fronts forces and destroy the remaining country.
