Descrizione:

*MONTI Pietro / DEL MONTE Pietro / MONCIO Pietro

1509
Exercitiorum Atque artis militaris collectanea In tris libros distincta

Translation:
Collected Martial Arts and Exercises in tree separate books

His nationality is unclear and researchers are divided on whether he was SPANISH or ITALIAN by birth. He states at the beginning of the first book that "... I will say much about the Spanish language, since that is the language in which I first wrote this treatise"

Regardless, he made his career in Italy, probably attached to the court at Milan, and published his treatises in Latin.
Monte is mentioned in various period texts, most notably Baldassarre Castiglione's famous treatise Libro del Cortegiano ("The Book of the Courtier").
Castiglione described him as "the true and only master of every form of trained strength and agility", and also mentioned that he instructed Galeazzo da Sanseverino "in wrestling, vaulting, and handling various types of weapon".
That he was well known as a master at arms is further attested by a note Leonardo da Vinci wrote to himself to consult Monte over his attempts to calculate the trajectory of a War Dart.

Mentioned by:
PALLAVICNI - 1670
MARCELLI - 1686

* Masaniello PARISE in his 1884 "Trattato teorico-pratico della scherma di spada e sciabola" at page 11 of his short bibliography note the following: "1509 - Moncio Pietro - Opere di scherma"
