After the French & Indian War, the British gained much land west of the Appalachian Mountains in the form of the Ohio Valley. However, in an attempt to prevent Native-Colonists hostilities like the ones seen before and during the French & Indian War, this proclamation was created to dissuade the colonists from entering the newly secured land. There were also the many French settlers in the Valley, which was a further disincentive to the British government. Thus, this proclamation declared the Appalachians the line of settlement for the colonists. Unfortunately for the British, many colonists had already expanded west, and the rest felt entitled to this land, as they had deaths in the war too. Altogether, the Proclamation only served to further inflame colonial anger, as it was largely ignored, but the idea of it left anger in the settlers.
