Refers to a series of legislations of the English Parliament passed to govern the colonies. They were passed to encourage the British mercantilist policies by aiding British shippers and increasing profits for the British trades. The first was the 1651 Navigation Act, passed to stunt the growing Dutch colonial trade. The act made it so all trade between Britain and the colonies had to go through English ships, or through ships from the land the imports were native to. This would weaken the threatening Dutch freight trade. Then, in 1660 the original act was voided and built upon the 1660 Navigation act. This not only closed previous loopholes, but also made it so some important colonial exports could only be shipped to the English. Two years later, the Navigation Act 1663 further reinforced that colonial exports had to be sent to England so they could be reviewed and quantized for tariff purposes, after which they were transferred to English ships to complete the journey. Also, these shipments required a payment after landing in Britain. This angered the colonists greatly, as they felt the laws were unjust and that they were being taken advantage of.
