Mathias was a german botanist collaborated with Theodor Schwann to create the cell theory. Schleiden practiced law before studying medicine and botany. He believed new cells were formed by budding from the surface of the nucleus. Schleiden met Schwann at the lab of a Johannes Muller a zoologist.
After Schleiden switched to his profession to his passion botany. This was after an almost lethal depression where he tried to commit suicide. He was a professor at the University of Jena and Dorpat. After he became a professor he got married to Bertha Mirus; whom he had three daughters with. Schleiden remarried after Bertha died to a Therese Marezoll.
