Though patented in the '20s, the steam iron did not catch on immediately, as most people believed that the dry iron could do all the same things the steam iron could do, simply with a deft hand and some delicate care. With the growth and expansion of newer artificial textiles in the 1940s, however, people realized that more modern practices had to be used to keep from ruining and scorching the more delicate synthetic fabrics, and thus, the efficient and gentle steam iron was accepted into the iron family.
