The first steam irons become commercially

Steam irons were introduced as a way to press particularly stubborn wrinkles out of clothes, especially ones in stiff or delicate fabrics. Before, water had to be sprinkled onto cloth to loosen it up and allow it to be pressed by an iron. The water bonded loosely with and disturbed the molecular strands in the fabric, changing its wrinkled shape, and helping the heat and pressure coming from the iron to flatten it out. Needing to sprinkle water, however, was a tedious process, and thus, designers began to implement sprayers inside the iron itself. Thus, the steam iron was born, fusing the normal electric iron with holes in the base plate that sprayed steam into the fabric to soften it and keep it from scorching.
