The Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court was decided on May 18th 1898, in a seven to one majority, and played a major role in the South’s attempt to resist the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments during the Reconstruction period; The South wanted to keep former slaves segregated, and were able to accomplish this by means of share-cropping, passing Jim Crow Laws, and forming hate groups like the KKK to keep freedmen from exercising their new rights. The case went to trial following an incident surrounding the 1890 Louisiana Separate Car Act, which segregated train cars for African Americans and whites. Plessy was actually mixed-race, and a civil rights activist group had him arrested on purpose to test the law, and show in court how the state failed to protect Plessy’s 13th and 14th Amendment rights, which were being held as violated. This Supreme Court decision was what allowed for these practices to continue, after the Court sided against Plessy, and was the origin of the “separate but equal” that would end up being the main long term impact of the case - it was only overturned during The Civil Rights Movement by another Supreme Court Case, Brown V. Board of Education in 1954.
