6 marzo 1857 anni - Dred Scott Decision

Descrizione:

Dred Scott and his family lived as slaves of a U.S military doctor, and prior to Dr. Emerson’s death, Scott traveled with him to Illinois (a free state) and Wisconsin (a free territory) and after his death, Scott sued for freedom on his family’s behalf - The Supreme Court was forced to confront the issue of slavery once and for all, and they decided against Scott in a 7-2 majority. As a result, slaves were officially named as property and could not be taken from their masters without “due process” as stated in the Fifth Amendment. African Americans were also denied citizenship, whether they were slaves of free men, therefore being unable to sue in court, and the Missouri Compromise was declared unconstitutional. The immediate impact saw high and rising tensions between the North and South - abolitionists and slave-holders - and a split in the Democratic Party along sectional lines. In the long term, the Dred Scott Decision could be named as one of the significant events leading up to the Civil War.
