3 marzo 1820 anni - Missouri Compromise of 1820
Descrizione:
The Missouri Comprmoise was passed in 1820 as a first attempt of solving the issue of slavery in the ever-expanding West, as the idea of Manifest Destiny prompted more settlers to explore the frontier in search of economic opportunity. The Compromise was made up of three important parts, the first establishing a dividing line on the 36 30’ parallel that would see any state above the line as free and any state below as slave. It also added Missouri as a slave state, and Maine as a free state in order to keep the balance of states equal at 12. This would ensure neither side would have an advantage in the Senate. This was an important turning point in the way the country adressed the issue of slavery, and although it would be eventually overturned by the Kansas and Nebraska Act, it kept peace within the Union for the present time when it was passed.
