The Seneca Falls Convention was held on July 19th and 20th 1848, and its purpose was to discuss and improve the rights of women in America. It was attended by women as well as some men, including famed abolitionist Fredrick Douglas. A historic document, the ‘Declaration of Sentiments’ which was framed from the Declaration of Independence, likened the plight of women to that of the colonists during the Revolutionary War, and sought to explain why women have been oppressed for too long, and demanded equal rights, including the right to vote. The Convention occurred during the Second Great Awakening, a time of perfectionism and reform, allowing the event to ignite the Women’s Rights Movement in America.
