29 dic 1890 anni - Massacre of Wounded Knee

Descrizione:

Key Event: The Massacre of Wounded Knee is a key event because it allowed for the creation of the American Indian movement, which would assist in the protection of Native American rights.

Defined: The U.S. army’s 7th Cavalry had surrounded a group of Native Americans who were performing the ghost dance. Fighting broke out and in the battle, 150 to 300 Natives were killed, which were mostly women and children. Only 25 members of the cavalry had died.

Described: The ghost dance was performed with hopes of seeing the return of buffalo while eliminating whites and many Americans were afraid of the dance. When the government orders them to stop dancing, it leads to the battle of Wounded Knee, which was one of the final conflicts between American soldiers and Natives.

Short Term: The American Indian Movement (AIM)was created in response to the tragedy, where it attempted to stop the police harassment of Indians. The group gained fame for their glamorous protests. However, many Native American leaders thought that the youth-dominated group was too radical.

Long Term: AIM had decided to protest against the conservative Sioux tribal chairman, Dick Wilson at the symbolic site where the massacre of Wounded Knee took place. Wilson responded by teaming with the federal government to siege the symbolic location and for 71 days, federal officers and AIM fought with guns.
