Descrizione:

In 1942, a report anoit yhr ate of Britain by Sir William Beverage (an economist and social reformer) sold over 100,000 copies in its first month of publication.

It said that people had a right to be free of the 'five giants' that could ruin their lives:

*Disease
*Want (need)
*ignorance
*idleness
*squalor (very poor living conditions)

The report suggested ways to improve the quality of life, and said that the government should 'take charge of social security from the cradle to the grave.'

After the Labour party , led by Clement Attlee, won the election by promising to follow Beverage's advice and set up the welfare state to look after the sick, the unemployed and children.
