19 agos 1989 anni - Do The Right Thing

Descrizione:

Summary: Set on the hottest day in the Bedford-Stuyvesant district of Brooklyn in 1989. Story focuses mainly around Sal's Pizza Parlor, which has been around for 25 years, and many other characters in the neighborhood. Tensions between Sal and the black neighborhood begin to rise before it explodes into violence.

Racism: Sal has two sons and one of them is an open racist. One day a guy named Buggin Out criticizes Sal for not having any pictures of African-Americans on the wall, and claims that he is a racist. Sal tells him that he only has pictures of famous Italians on his wall, because he is Italian. Buggin Out tries to get other people to boycott from going to his restaurant until he puts up a "brother" on the wall. He ends up recruiting Radio Raheem who is a big and strong black man who always carries around a boom box. One day right after closing, he walks into the restaurant and tries to order food with his radio blasting music. Sal asks him to turn it off but Radio refuses. Sal became furious and crushed the radio with a bat. A fight ensued as everyone watched and the police showed up. As they were trying to restrain Radio Raheem, they accidentally strangled him to death with a head lock. This caused an all out riot in the neighborhood and a ton of property was destroyed. This is another case of police brutality in the black community. This also has somewhat to do with reverse racism, where the incident occurred because someone claimed Sal to be a racist when he wasn't. This movie also shows a lot about the living conditions that blacks faced in this lower-class neighborhood.
