In response to the Sovet threat, the United States helped found the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which essentially bound it and many other non-communist European nations together in a mutual defense pact against the Soviets. Should the Soviets invade any of those countries, all other countries within the pact would work together to fight back. The United States would continue to build a network of alliances through other collective security agreements, thus helping to prevent Communism from spreading.
