In this landmark executive order, Truman nationalized a large chunk of the steel industry after many strikes had rendered the steel industry minimally productive and an economic burden. Thus, the government took control of and began to operate 87 major steel companies. This expanded the role of government in everyday affairs and the economy, via an executive action by the president.
