Republicans generally supported the tariff, declaring that it increased manufacturing and benefited American workers. Conversely, democrats attacked tariffs as harming free trade and as counterproductive to those who consumed products rather than making them, namely farmers. The tarriff battle would escalate with the passage of the McKinley Tariff in 1890.
