1 dic 437 anni a. C. - Propylaea

Descrizione:

Entry gateway to the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. It was designed by the architect Mnesicles. The Propylaea served as the gateway to the Acropolis and was constructed in 437-432 BC. but was left unfinished at the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War in 432 BC. The gateway is entered via a hexastyle Doric portico and leads to a columnar passageway which enhances the drama of the approach into the sacred enclosure of the temples. The Doric design includes "optical refinements" and incorporates bands of dark Eleusinian stone contrasting with the white marble. The Propylaea's "special importance is as an early example of the grouping of a building with a complex plan and on different levels so as to create harmonious spatial relationships between its various parts."*
