1 gen 1980 anni - Contemporary is Changing
Descrizione:
As the world is entering a new millennium, contemporary literature is constantly changing.
During the 60s, many universities were built and the comprehensive education system was initiated in Britain which resulted in many young people becoming educated. The more that young people are being educated ultimately represents this generation questioning outdated beliefs of the past generation.
As technology advances, media culture interprets values and events for individuals rather than allowing people to make their own interpretations of events.
In the 60s, abortion and homosexuality were also legalized.
All of these new advances in society play into what distinguishes the contemporary period as a movement of social reformation. The class structure of Britain along with social hierarchy, gender identity, the roles of women, moral values and social attitudes toward family are all prominent questioned ideas that are represented by writers of contemporary British literature.
An important novel within the contemporary period is Trumpet by Jackie Kay. It represents a newfound acceptance of transgender people which defines what the contemporary period is all about: questioning old beliefs and implementing new ones.
