10 sett 1878 anni - Literature: Reclaiming of the past

Descrizione:

A huge part of Victorian literature was a reclaiming of the past. Victorians took an interest in classical literature but also the medieval literature of England. As many of us still do, the Victorians treasured stories with chivalry and heroes. They loved stories involving knights of old and the behavior demonstrated in them. Victorians wanted to revive the noble, chivalrous acts in these stories and mirror some of the behaviors of the respectful and great heroes. A good example of this is Alfred Tennyson’s “Idylls of the King”. This work was somewhat of a combination between the stories and tales of King Arthur with current ideas and concerns of the late nineteenth century. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of English painters, poets, and critics founded in 1848, also drew on folklore and myths for their art. Victorian literature was a time where the classical and medieval literature could be brought back in a new, contemporary light.
