10 gen 1863 anni - Literature: Discoveries of Science

Descrizione:

During the Victorian period (1830-1901), we see a number of changes in British literature. Of these changes, one of the most important is the development of science in literature. The Victorians took it upon themselves to describe and classify the entire “natural world”. Much of this writing and influence seems to come from one specific place. Furthermore, this place can almost be described by a single book, Charles Darwin’s “The Origin of Species”. This book took a long time to get much of any kind of acceptance from society. This is understandable as the theories of the book most especially evolution, jarred many of the ideas the Victorian people had about themselves and their understandings of the beginning of humanity. Charles Darwin and the scientific movement changed literature forever. With these new thoughts, we see the creation of the old gothic tales, the first examples of fantastic fiction. The Victorian period produced several of these works of literature such as “Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and “Dracula”.
