Worn on the top of the head. It is the only tradition where a women wore the mask. It was done for young girls to go into an initiation. The mask represents the ideal quality for the girls to be. Eyes suggest she should be reserved, the small mouth shows that she should be quiet, the small ears show that she needs to not listen to gossip. The fat in the chin shows that ideally she needs enough fat to have babies. The Sowei mask is supposed to be a spirit from the bottom of the lake. The scarification lines represent the ideal look for women. The mask also is made to look like a chrysalis because that’s what the women were supposed to be at the time, not a caterpillar, not a butterfly. Made out of Wood, cloth and fiber by the Sande Society of the Mende peoples of the West African forests of Sierra Leone and Liberia.
