9 sett 1850 anni - California Joins the Union
Descrizione:
During the Mexican-American War, John C. Frédmont created the Republic of California after leading Americans to California. He joined forces with Stephen Kearny and John Sloat to fight the Mexican/Californio soldiers in what is called the Bear Flag Revolt.
Just after America and Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, Mexico ceded California to America. A few days prior, gold was found near Sacramento. This finding sped up the process of California becoming a state.
There was controversy in Congress as to whether California would be admitted as a free or slave state, but it was eventually accepted as a free state and serves as a refuge for opportunity up to today.
