The Missouri Territory, created from land purchased through the Louisiana Purchase, eventually wanted to become its own state. However, it was a bit tricky to do so because there needed to be a balance in the Union between slave and free states. Henry Clay had the idea of the Missouri Compromise, which allowed Missouri to enter as a slave state if Maine entered as a free state. This was to keep a balance in the number of both free and slave states so one will not overpower the other in Congress. The compromise also declared any new state that was created above the 36*30' line as a free state and any new ones below it as a slave state. The compromise postponed the Civil War by maintaining the Status Quo, but it also was a failure in the long run and was repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The South was mad that the government could make laws about Slavery, and the North was mad because it supported slavery.
