But on one summer day he watched his crops die in a huge hailstorm. John begins to distance himself from Polly, he writes to her less. "He felt disconnected from the old country and everyone in it."
With the collapse of the railway construction, rising prices, and the three-year drought many people were left unemployed, including John. He finds that his only solution is enlisting for the war in Europe.
