An act of the US Congress stating that the USA has relations with the "people on Taiwan" but only recognizes the People's Republic of China.

The 1979 agreement permits arms sales and provides a legal framework for unofficial relations with Taiwan after the United States broke diplomatic ties with Taiwan and established relations with mainland China.
