Madhava is considered the father of mathematical analysis; his work on the power series for π and for sine and cosine functions, and along with other Kerala school mathematicians, founded the important concepts of calculus. The progression from algebra to considerations of infinite series is attributed to Madhava. What is truly remarkable is his estimate of an error term; this implies that the limit nature of the infinite series was quite well understood by him. He discovered tests of convergence of infinite series, and the analysis of infinite continued fractions. Madhava’s students wrote the world's first calculus text, which gives detailed derivations of many calculus theorems and formulae. It includes such fundamentals of calculus: differentiation, term-by-term integration, and the theory that the area under a curve is its integral. Madhava provided the creative impulse for the development of the rich mathematical tradition in medieval Kerala
