Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist. This was a result of increasing nationalism in the large Austro-Hungarian empire, and minorities desired their own independent countries. The assassination ultimately began WWI and eventually dragged most of Europe into the war.
