Frankish king born 742 who ascended to kingship at 26 in 768. He subdued the Aquitaine rebellion, expanded Frankish territory south into the Pyrenees, and fought with Moors, as well as protecting the papacy from Lombard tribe in N. Italy. He was crowned King of Lombards in 774. Although he failed to conquer S. Italy, he conquered Saxony, Avar territory, and Slavic territory, and was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 800. He reformed the military, currency, writing, and education.
