The Cuban Missile Crisis was a direct confrontation between the USSR and the United States. This was caused because Khrushchev was building a relationship with Fidel Castro and began building Missile sites in Cuba. The US didn't want that so they began fighting and this was the closets the two counties got to a full blown nuclear war.
