28 dic 1764 anni - The Stamp Act

Descrizione:

The Stamp act was passed in 1765 was a direct tax on many printed goods which included legal documents, playing cards, magazines, and more. The tax was very unpopular with the colonists and they deemed it a violation of their rights, as they were being taxed without representation. The newfound slogan was “No taxation without representation”, and was carried on many assemblies and protests. It was the first act that brought the colonists together in a major response to Britain. Many groups such as the Sons of Liberty were formed and sometimes turned violent, which soon intimidated any tax collectors and the tax was never actually enforced. It was repealed on March 18, 1766, but the damage was already done. The colonists trusted Britain even less and harbored more hatred than before, which helped speed up the revolution.
