4 giug 1946 anni - Adler & Hutchins launch Public "Great Books Program", basis of Britannica series

Descrizione:

In 1946, the two men [Adler and Hutchins] organized the Great Books program, which invited members of the public to gather and discuss one classic every two weeks.

The Encyclopedia Britannica Great books series was designed in tandem with this project. Sen. William Benton asked Adler and Hutchins to draw up the list. The set was published in 1952 and had 54 vols (more than the Harvard set) and stopped at 1900. Britannica salesmen sold tons of these "Great Books of the Western World" sets door to door in the 50s and 60s

Hutchins' introductory essay to the set was "The Great Conversation"; also coined "the civilization of the dialogue" in that essay.

It also had the "Syntopicon" - the index to the 102 great ideas in two volumes.

in 1990 Adler updated the set through 1950; now a 60 volume set.

This was based on the Columbia model
