Towards the end of the Mexican Revolution of 1910, Venustiano Carranza and his supporters called for a constitutional convention to draft a new constitution. This draft was then proposed to congress, and the new law of the land was approved in 1917. After 34 years under a strict dictatorship, this constitution established a representative government, separation of powers, and a federal system.
