The War of Spanish Succession was a war fought between the Grand Alliance of England, Holland and the Holy Roman Empire and the Bourbon dominions of France and Spain beginning in 1701. A power struggle over the Spanish throne once Charles II died, it ended with Philip V as king of Spain and Louis xiv also recognizing the right of the house of Hanover to the English throne.
