The war against the Gadianton Robbers became so severe that the Nephites were nearly destroyed as a people. Lamanites also suffered greatly, though not to the point of utter destruction. Almost in desperation the Lamanites, especially those who had been converted to the gospel, joined with the Nephites in prosecuting this war.

This joining together led to something rather miraculous. When the faithful Lamanites joined the Nephites they became numbered among that people, calling themselves Nephites.
At that point the Lord removed the curse that he had placed on the Lamanites, and their skin became white like the Nephites.
This was an instant transformation, as the curse was lifted. Previous groups of converted Lamanites (most notably the Anti-Nephi-Lehies) were blessed that the curse no longer followed them. But at this time the curse is simply removed.
The result of this was that the Lamanites, as a separate and distinct group of people, ceased to exist. There were now only Nephites and Gadianton Robbers. Now, the Lamanites who had joined these robbers were still cursed, but they were no longer known as Lamanites.
