In the costly Battle of Shiloh, Grant’s Union army was attacked by the Confederates, but the following day he successfully led his army to take the offensive and cause the Confederates to withdraw to Corinth. At Vicksburg, Grant was a field commander who led his army eastward and captured Jackson, Mississippi before brilliantly trapping the 30,000 Confederates inside Vicksburg. At the Battle of Chattanooga, Grant helped bring the third great Union victory, acting as commander; in early 1864, he assumed the role of general in chief.
